Davis 4th of July Criterium

Promoter: Davis Bike Club

Course Description: A flat "L" shaped course with three left's, a right and then two more left turns.

Road Surface: The road is in good shape.

Gearing: Flat criterium gears.

Facilities: There are porta cans around the course and several restaurants open also. Steve's Pizza and Togo's would be two favorites.

Weather: It's usually hot for this race. It's just a question of how hot. One year it was 110 degrees. Ouch!

Feeding: Feeding in crits is generally illegal. If it's evil hot they will sometimes allow feeding in the longer hotter races. That would usually be the 1/2/Pro race.

Rules Specific to this race:

Race Advice: It's about 50-50 as to whether this race ends in a break away or a field sprint.

The final straight isn't short enough that you'd want to come out of the final corner in first place. But you will want to be in the top five or so. Be careful of the final two corners if you take an inside line. The street is heavily crowned and the inside line is like going through a dip. If you're not prepared for it you will launch your rear wheel up in the air and come down sideways. Not always fatal, but always exciting! In fact keep in mind that all the streets are crowned. If you go through a corner wide you could end up on the off camber side of the crown while leaning over and pedaling. Prime pedal catching territory... I tagged the pedal when I was off the front alone once. It was kind of embarrassing. Luckily I didn't crash, but it was exciting.

Be careful of the gutter on the second straight away. The pack generally takes a line on the right hand edge of the pavement and there is a bit of a lip in places between the asphalt road and the concrete gutter. If you get moved over into the gutter, take a second to think about where and how you're going to come back onto the asphalt.

Lodging: There is a Ramada Inn right by the course and a Motel 6 in town also.

For me, this is definitely one of the must do criteriums. It's a good course, a good race and a pretty good atmosphere.
